#8 Balance & Movement

Appropriate gaits: Walk, Trot, Canter

Stand in your stirrups and balance in a vertical stance (not a deep 2-point) while performing school figures.

Time: 5 minutes (or stop when you get tired)

Tip: Extend your lower arms up the neck for better balance.  Most riders balance best with their hands about 1 foot behind the horse’s ears.

Focus: Allow movement through your ankles, knees, and hips without tensing.

Focus: Use your legs to impart more impulsion and vertical movement.

Focus: Balance without using your hands against neck.

Focus: Keep your back filled out and your chest facing forward.

Focus: Don’t move your hands away from the neck, even when steering.

Good for: Creating impulsion with your legs.  Rider balance.  Independent hands.
